The brilliance of Emerson Palmieri has actually highlighted a major problem for West Ham boss David Moyes

Emerson Palmieri returned to the West Ham United starting lineup last night, having missed our game with Everton on Sunday through suspension.

West Ham left-back Emerson Palmieri has really come into his own this season, and David Moyes will undoubtedly be delighted with the Italy international’s form.

The 29-year-old took a while to settle in to life with the Hammers, but his turnaround in form over the past six months or so has been great to see.

Emerson possesses technical ability in abundance, impressive pace and his energy levels for someone who is 29 really really are astounding.

He came back into the team for our Carabao Cup clash with Arsenal at the London Stadium last night and put in yet another top-class performance for West Ham.

However, the former Chelsea ace’s superb display has actually highlighted a massive problem for Moyes going forward…

Emerson Palmieri brilliance has highlighted a huge problem for West Ham boss David Moyes

The 29-year-old returned to the starting XI in place of Aaron Cresswell for the clash with the Gunners last night.

And as good as Emerson undoubtedly was, it highlighted a real problem for the Hammers – the fact that we are so weak without him.

Whenever Cresswell, 33, starts for West Ham, the quality down the left hand side falls off the edge of a cliff, both defensively and inside the final third.

What do we do if, God forbid, the Italian sustains a long-term injury? Or what about if he’s suspended for a few games?

West Ham absolutely cannot afford to be without Emerson Palmieri for a prolonged period of time – the drop-off in quality without him is just too severe.

And it’s why, alongside a centre-forward, signing a new left-back should be one of Moyes’s main two priorities in the January transfer window.

Let’s hope that the Scot addresses that issue when the January window opens.
