David Moyes wanted to sign a specific striker in 2022, and it should tell the West Ham United fans all we need to know about the Scot.
West Ham boss David Moyes has really struggled to sign a striker who suits his system, since returning to the London Stadium in December 2019.
In my opinion, it’s a case of any striker would struggle in Moyes’s archaic setup, but there’s definitely some truth to the argument that in order to succeed as a centre-forward under the Scot, you need to possess similar attributes to Michail Antonio.
Because the Hammers chief likes his striker to possess real pace and power, he often converts wide men to play in the central role – just look at Marko Arnautovic, the aforementioned Antonio and now Jarrod Bowen.
Gianluca Scamacca came into the club in the summer of 2022, whilst Danny Ings arrived just six months later.
Both strikers were disastrous fits for Moyes’s system, and the Italian has already left the club. Now a truly baffling claim has been made about Moyes and Ings…
David Moyes tried to sign striker before
According to a report from The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas, Moeys tried to bring Ings to the London Stadium in the summer of 2022, but failed to do so, and ended up with Scamacca instead.
Firstly, how can the Scot watch Ings play and think that he’s the right striker to play in his system? And secondly, how can he move from the 31-year-old on to Scamacca – an entirely different striker all together?
There is absolutely no method here whatsoever – it’s pure scattergun and if there ever was a reason for Tim Steidten to be given full power when it comes to signing a striker, Moyes bringing Danny Ings to the club was it.
Listen, I’m extremely grateful for what the 60-year-old has done for us as a club. He guided us to our first major trophy in 43 years last season – something that I will never forget.
However, I genuinely don’t think he’s capable of taking us to the next level now, with the brand of football that he deploys.
The fact that David Moyes thought Danny Ings was the striker he needed at West Ham tells us all we need to know. Hand Steidten the keys and let him drive from now on please!
