A photo from Gent paints a glum picture of the mood among David Moyes and his West Ham assistants after another frustrating display.

If David Moyes was looking for an improved performance from his West Ham side after unconvincing wins over Fulham and Southampton either side of a 5-1 home defeat to Newcastle last week, he didn’t get it in Gent.

The only real positive for from the 1-1 Europa Conference League first leg draw is that the Hammers did not lose and now have home advantage for the second leg at the London Stadium next Thursday.

That said, Moyes was honest enough to be critical of the performance of his side after the game saying he was not happy with what he saw.

That echoed thoughts of West Ham fans who are finding their side a really hard watch this season.

The West Ham staff are not immune to such frustrations either.

And it has showed on the bench in recent games.

None more so than the European clash on Thursday night.

Whatever work is being done on the training ground it is not showing in performances.

Yes West Ham defended manfully against Fulham. But as a unit the Hammers are showing no cohesion and can barely string five passes together let alone showcase any patterns of play.

Many fans have noted Moyes seems somewhat cut off from his assistants this season.

Previously the Scot would be seen in almost constant dialogue with the likes of Paul Nevin and Kevin Nolan during matches.

But he has cut an increasingly isolated figure on the bench and touchline.

Of course a picture can be open to interpretation but this image from the Gent first leg captured a frustrated looking staff sat alongside one another on the West Ham bench.

They are right to be frustrated.

Yes the manager must take ultimate responsibility for the results and performances. But some of the poor passing and ball retention on show from the Hammers this season cannot be solely blamed on Moyes.

While things simply aren’t clicking, West Ham must continue to dig in and grind out results so a full inquest can be held in the summer.
