Nikola Vlasic has been awful for West Ham but if David Moyes played him in his correct position we might just start seeing better things from him.

Vlasic joined the Hammers from CSKA Moscow last summer for around £33 million (Evening Standard).

The 24-year-old has really struggled to establish himself at the London Stadium but in all fairness to him, he hasn’t really been given much of a chance to prove himself in the Claret and Blue.

The Croatia international has been given just 1622 minutes spread over 35 appearances (Transfermarkt). That works out at an average of just 46 minutes per game.

Vlasic clearly hasn’t impressed David Moyes so far on the pitch. When we’ve needed goals against Arsenal, Eintracht Frankfurt and Chelsea over the past eight days, the Scot hasn’t even brought him on off the bench.

There could be a very simple solution to Vlasic’s problems at West Ham though…

Nikola Vlasic has been awful for West Ham and there’s a simple reason as to why

The 24-year-old Croatian international is a number 10 by trade.

He has been most effective throughout his career when deployed just behind the central striker.

Moyes has never played Vlasic through the middle though, preferring instead to stick him out on the left wing where he is totally ineffective.

The Croatian lacks any kind of pace, so he is never going to be able to beat his man on the outside.

However, the 24-year-old does possess exceptional technique and impressive strength, with a low centre of gravity – all attributes that make him perfectly suited to the number 10 role.

Moyes clearly doesn’t trust him enough to start him against Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday night.

He surely has to try Vlasic out in the central role during our last four Premier League games though. There is an argument to be made that Vlasic needs to do more when given a chance, and that’s certainly a fair point.

Nikola Vlasic has been awful for West Ham – there’s no denying that.

The former CSKA Moscow ace needs to be given the tools to help him succeed though. And playing him in the correct position would certainly give Vlasic a chance to show the West Ham fans what he’s made of.
