Graham Potter is playing an extremely dangerous game with Luis Guilherme at West Ham

West Ham United manager Graham Potter is playing a really dangerous game with Luis Guilherme.

It was actually claimed back in January that West Ham were willing to sell Luis Guilherme for £20 million.

However, he remained at the London Stadium in the end, on the say-so of Graham Potter.

West Ham signed Luis Guilherme from Palmeiras in the summer of 2024 for around £20 million, with £5 million worth of potential add-ons.

The 19-year-old was very highly-rated in his homeland when he made the move to West Ham.

However, it was claimed during his first few months at the club that he wasn’t impressing in training one little bit.

That must have changed after Potter arrived in East London though.

Luis Guilherme saved his Hammers career after his cameo performance against Chelsea at Stamford bridge last month.

It is claimed that Potter blocked a transfer that would have seen Guilherme join Brazilian side Flamengo from West Ham on transfer deadline day for around £19 million.

That’s fair enough, but Potter now has to live by the sword, or die by it as the case may be.

The Hammers head coach is playing a dangerous game with Guilherme in my opinion.

It was a hugely bold call to keep hold of the Brazilian teenager, given the fact that the opportunity was there for West Ham to recoup the fee they paid for him.

Genuis or reckless move from Graham Potter?

Only time will tell if Potter is to be proven right for keeping hold of Guilherme.

However, what he cannot afford to do is not play him at all, having made the decision to keep him.

Guilherme has been given just 55 minutes of action for the Hammers first-team this season.

That’s just not enough in my opinion, unless of course he simply isn’t good enough.

But then Graham Potter’s decision to keep hold of Luis Guilherme would have been utterly nonsensical wouldn’t it.

The Hammers boss can’t have it both ways. He has made his bed with Guilherme, now he has to lie in it.
