It was a truly disastrous deadline day for West Ham United in the end, as indeed the January transfer window was as a whole.
The January transfer window saw West Ham bring in just one player – Kalvin Phillips on loan – as deadline day passed with no new incomings.
There was late drama with Hammers duo Said Benrahma and Pablo Fornals failing to complete their agreed moves to Lyon and Real Betis respectively.
David Moyes has a real problem regarding strength in depth, especially in the attacking department, and it remains to be seen what will actually happen with the Algerian and the Spaniard.
However, even if the French and Spanish club fail to get those deals over the line through appeals and the duo remain at the London Stadium, they surely won’t be motivated enough to make a positive impact for us over the course of the next four months.
However, there is someone else Moyes has at his disposal who has been largely forgotten about for the past three months…
After deadline day disaster, West Ham may have internal solution
Michail Antonio has not started a game for the Hammers since November 4th, and he hasn’t featured at all for us since November 12th.
Sure, the 33-year-old has been absolutely awful for us when he has played this season, with just two Premier League goals to his name (Transfermarkt).
However, we desperately need him to return to full fitness firing on all cylinders now, and we all know that he is well versed in playing out on the wing and causing mayhem. Or he could just slot back into the centre-forward role, allowing Jarrod Bowen to move back out on the right wing.
Antonio is more than capable of making a big difference for us during the remainder of the season, and trust me, I’m fully aware that I could be clutching at straws here!
If nothing else, the Jamaica international will be another body for us during what will be an extremely hectic final four months of the season.
Transfer deadline day was an unequivocal disaster for West Ham, there’s absolutely no doubting that. However, if we get a fully fit, determined and hungry Antonio back amongst the goals, things may we not be as bad as we first feared regarding our hopes for the remainder of the season.
