Failing to sign David Raum for €30 million (£26 million) in the summer transfer window was the biggest mistake West Ham boss David Moyes has ever made.
In the summer, signing a top-class left-back should have been the main priority for Moyes, and a right-back for that matter.
However, the Hammers boss didn’t do that. He brought Emerson to the London Stadium – a 28-year-old who lacks the kind of physicality, pace or power to be successful in the Premier League.

The Italian now looks like a totally pointless signing, but the frustrating thing for West Ham and Moyes is that it didn’t need to be that way.
The East London outfit had the chance to sign Germany international David Raum from Hoffenheim in the summer.
However, we missed out to RB Leipzig in the end, with the Bundesliga outfit paying around €30 million (£26 million) to sign the 24-year-old (Buli News).
Why on earth didn’t we push harder to sign the 15-capped Germany international? He would have been absolutely huge for the Hammers. And the fact that we haven’t got him is on Moyes…
£26 million transfer error biggest mistake David Moyes has ever made
In the modern day game, having two powerful, pacy and physically robust full-backs, or wing-backs, is one of the most important things that a team challenging for honours needs.
Far from that though, West Ham fans are forced to watch Aaron Cresswell and Vladimir Coufal week in, week out. What an utter joke that is, especially when considering the fact that we could have signed Raum in the summer.
The RB Leipzig ace is one of the very best attacking full-backs in word football, and he is a very good defender as well.
He’s powerful, has bags of pace and is a real gritty, tenacious competitor. Football Talent Scoutdescribe Raum as a ‘superb’ left-back. Meanwhile, the Bundesliga’s official website have labelled Raum as an ‘outstanding’ full-back.
Raum was in absolutely exceptional form for Hoffenheim last season.
He bagged three goals and 13 assists in 32 Bundesliga games (Transfermarkt). Not bad for a left-back eh!
What a huge different Raum would have made for West Ham this season.
Moyes really does need to start realising what type of players are needed for the modern game, before it’s too late. This month may well be his last chance to rectify his recent mistakes in the transfer market.
And David Moyes failing to sign David Raum in the summer is arguably the biggest mistake that he has made, certainly since he returned to the London Stadium.
