West Ham United fans have been left confused by the absence of the annual Hammer of the Year awards.
New Czech name on West Ham radar as Moyes looks to Talent of the Year winner
Some of the names to have won West Ham’s player of the year, young player of the year, best signing, player’s player and manager’s player have graced the very top of the game.
The West Ham club awards have been officially running for 63 years – since 1958.
Hammer of the Year award boasts some illustrious names
Winners include the likes of World Cup winning trio Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters.
And other illustrious names grace the Hammer of the Year list too like Trevor Brooking, Billy Bonds, Julian Dicks, Paul Ince, Rio Ferdinand, Paolo Di Canio, Joe Cole, Carlos Tevez, Dimitri Payet and reigning winner Declan Rice.
West Ham fans look forward to crowning their Hammer of the Year each season.
Especially this term after the players and David Moyes recorded West Ham’s best ever Premier League points total and secured Europa League group stage football for the first time.
Fans confused by absence of annual awards vote
Usually voting starts around March-April for the Hammer of the Year awards and the winners are announced at an awards dinner.
That was not possible last season and won’t be this due to Covid.
But the awards are usually sorted prior to the end of the campaign.
This season, though, there has been no mention of the Hammer of the Year awards from the club and no vote has taken place.
With players heading off for the Euros or on a summer break, it begs the question when and indeed if they are happening.
West Ham fans have been taking to social media to ask why the awards or vote have not taken place. People like West Ham insider ExWHUemployee have been inundated with questions about it on Twitter.
No word from West Ham yet but frontrunners must be Rice and brilliant Czech duo
Even he is perplexed.
It seems if and when Hammer of the Year does take place, it will be a close call between Rice, Tomas Soucek and Vladimir Coufal.
If Rice retains the award, one of West Ham’s Czech heroes is certain to win signing of the season – likely Coufal given Soucek joined on loan during the season before.
I guess all we can do is wait for confirmation from West Ham.
