West Ham star Nayef Aguerd made astonishing comments to a Hammers teammate which have come true against all odds.
West Ham’s £30m summer signing Aguerd has been one of the standout stars for Morocco on their astonishing run to the World Cup semi-finals.
Hammers hearts were in mouths when Aguerd went down injured at the end of his country’s last 16 win over Spain.
The West Ham man left the field in tears and was missing for the quarter-final win over Portugal.
It has since been reported the centre-back has a low grade thigh tear which will keep him out for around three weeks.
So it looks highly likely that his World Cup is over from a playing perspective with the huge clash against France taking pace on Wednesday night.
Aguerd has helped Morocco make history by becoming the first African team to reach a World Cup semi-final.
Not many people saw that coming. Except the former Rennes centre-back that is.
Because West Ham star Aguerd made astonishing comments to a Hammers teammate which have come true against all odds.
According to L’Équipe, Aguerd told his West Ham teammates – most notably France back-up goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, that he would be meeting them in the semi-finals of World Cup with Morocco.
What would have been an outlandish statement has become astonishingly prophetic from the hugely impressive West Ham centre-back.
L’Équipe claims that before departing for Qatar, Aguerd told West Ham teammate Areola: “We’ll get through the groups and we’ll see you in the semi-finals or the final, that’s for sure.”
Nayef should perhaps be nicknamed Nostradamus Aguerd from here on in after that statement.
There is no doubt that prediction may have been laughed off had it been made public before the tournament. Not now, though.
If Aguerd was worth £30m before the tournament you can probably put another £20m on top of that figure so good have his performances been.
Whether a Morocco side shorn of Aguerd can make more history by succeeding where West Ham captain Declan Rice and his England teammates failed against France remains to be seen.
