West Ham fans call for David Moyes to thrust Mipo Odubeko into first team squad after Jermain Defoe-esque display of unerring finishing prowess

A number of West Ham United fans have called on David Moyes to quickly wake up to the potential of former Manchester United youngster Mipo Odubeko.

The young striker only turns 18 next month but has been in red hot form for West Ham’s development side.

Shades of Defoe as starlet shines with unerring finishing prowess

And it is easy to see why so many clubs were chasing the prolific goalscorer.

Odubeko was twice on the scoresheet as West Ham’s Under 23s beat Southend 3-1 in the EFL Trophy this week. That made it four goals in the last two games.

But there was something more to his performance. It made a statement and felt like a watershed moment for the youngster.

Many West Ham fans remarked they have not seen the kind of deadly finishing power and prowess displayed by Odubeko since a certain Jermain Defoe was emerging from the West Ham ranks.

Defoe’s talent was so obvious he forced his way into the West Ham squad as a 17-year-old.

West Ham fans call for Moyes to thrust Odubeko into first team

And many Hammers fans are calling for Odubeko to follow in his footsteps. His goals were unerringly powerful and precise. Both from distance Odubeko scored with his right and left foot giving the goalkeeper absolutely no chance.

It comes as West Ham boss Moyes finds himself short of striker options and money to improve them going into the new season.

The Scot has been told he must sell to buy this summer.

And after the controversial sale of Grady Diangana, his priority is to sign at least two defenders.

It is widely considered West Ham need two new full-backs, a centre back and a striker.

The jury is very much still out on £45 million record signing Sebastien Haller. And Michail Antonio is injury prone.

Odubeko left Man United as he felt his progression to the first team was blocked by the likes of Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood.

‘Could be West Ham’s Rooney’

So West Ham fans are calling on Moyes to elevate Odubeko to the first team squad after his eye-catching performances.

And he could end up saving the club millions in the transfer market.

Here are a selection of comments about Odubeko from West Ham fans on Twitter.
