Teddy Sheringham has absolutely raved about Declan Rice, insisting that West Ham should not sell him for anything less than £150 million.
The 23-year-old Hammers ace has been absolutely sensational for the Hammers this season.
Rice has actually been West Ham’s best and most consistent player over the past three years. This season though, he has reached an entirely different level.
Dec is the most important player David Moyes has at his disposal at the London Stadium.
Rice is still under contract with West Ham until the summer of 2024. We also have the option of extending that deal by a further 12 months. So there is no immediate panic regarding his future.
Having said that, Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United are all thought to be after Rice’s signature in the summer (The Telegraph). So that is obviously somewhat of a concern.
Whatever happens though, it will take serious money to prise Dec away from the London Stadium.
Teddy Sheringham urges West Ham to play Declan Rice hardball
Many believe that if the Hammers fail to qualify for the Champions League this season, the 23-year-old midfielder could be off in the summer.
Should that happen, it will obviously be a bitter blow for West Ham.
Teddy Sheringham highlighted how the East London outfit should dig their heels in with Dec in the summer, however, as quoted by the Daily Mail:
“I have to liken him to Steven Gerrard. Not many players can eat up the ground like Declan – Gerrard used to do exactly the same, he used to overpower people in midfield. Add that to his passing ability, his understanding of the game. His desire, you can see how he loves the game and wants to get better. For me, he’s up there with the top players in the world in midfield at the moment, there’s no denying that. I think Moyes said something about him being a £100m player, didn’t he? I’d hold on to him and say, ‘I want more than that, this player’s unbelievable, he’s better than that. If you really want this guy you’re going to have to break the bank and show me you think of him as much as I do, because I’m not letting him go for £100m. When the best centre forward in the world was up for sale in the summer, Tottenham wanted £200m for him, the other clubs didn’t have that valuation. I’m going up to 150, 160 for Declan Rice.“
Sheringham is absolutely spot on here.
People may say there is no way that any club should be paying £150 million for Rice, and that might be true.
That’s the entire point though.
Rice may not be worth that amount to other clubs but he is to us. Even if we sold the 23-year-old for £200 million it would be nigh on impossible to replace him.
In my opinion, Dec is the very best in the world at what he does. In order for West Ham to make genuine progress over the next few years, keeping him at the London Stadium will be an absolute necessity.
In order to do that though, the board need to back Moyes to the hilt in the summer transfer window. And if that doesn’t happen, Rice’s exit from West Ham will undoubtedly be a swift one.
