Teddy Sheringham has lifted the lid on what he told the West Ham fans about Declan Rice during a recent speech he gave at an event.
The 23-year-old has been absolutely sensational for the Hammers so far this season.
Rice has now fully established himself as arguably the best box-to-box central midfield player in the Premier League, if not the world.
David Moyes has worked wonders since taking over at the London Stadium back in December 2019 and the work that the Scot has done with Declan Rice has been particularly impressive.
The challenge that Moyes and West Ham face now is keeping hold of the England international. Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United all want to sign him in the summer according to The Telegraph.
And Teddy Sheringham has highlighted how the Hammers face a tough summer with Rice a man in high demand…
Teddy Sheringham opens up on what he told West Ham fans about Declan Rice
The powerful 23-year-old midfielder has go on to another level entirely this term.
He is absolutely vital to the way in which West Ham play and is a crucial player for us both defensively and in the final third.
And Teddy Sheringham has explained why it could be difficult for West Ham to keep Declan Rice in the summer, as quoted by the Metro:
“It’s going to be hard for West Ham to keep Declan Rice. I spoke to West Ham supporters and said, ‘he is the best midfielder in the world at the moment’. I rate him highly. He’s got everything a central midfielder needs. He understands the game, he’s got good pace, he can control the ball, pass it, make good tackles and get forward. He has the stature of Steven Gerrard in midfield – he’s that dominant now that even when he’s getting closed down, he’s got good pace and power about him that he can get away from midfielders. That’s very unusual to have that in a central midfield position. He’d be an upgrade on Pogba because he is the best midfielder in the world. Pogba is a talented boy, but leads with the wrong character. He doesn’t inspire people around him, he doesn’t inspire his supporters around him whereas someone like Declan does. You want to roll with him, the way he plays the game.”
You can’t argue with Sheringham there can you!
Declan Rice has absolutely everything and he could play for any team in world football, there’s no doubting that.
One thing we will say, however, is that he is still under contract at the London Stadium until the summer of 2024 and West Ham have the option to extend that deal by a further 12 months.
So the Hammers still hold all the cards.
If the West Ham owners prove to Dec that we can match his ambition by making some top-class summer signings, then who knows? Perhaps we will be able to keep the 23-year-old in East London.
As we all know only too well though, that is a very, very big ‘if’.
