West Ham should seriously consider switching Issa Diop from a centre-back into a box-to-box midfielder.

The 24-year-old has been incredibly poor over the past five weeks or so since filling in for Kurt Zouma.

Diop seems to have all of the attributes needed to succeed at the very highest level. His concentration and decision making lets him down time and time again though.

When you’re playing in the Premier League, you get severely punished for those concentration lapses.

Having Diop at the heart of West Ham’s defence must be a huge worry for David Moyes. We think that there could be a very simple solution though.

Should West Ham boss Moyes switch things up with Issa Diop?

Perhaps the Scot should move the 24-year-old into a midfield role.

It seems as though he doesn’t really have the qualities needed to become a top class centre-back. He joined from Toulouse in the summer of 2018 for around £22 million and he hasn’t really kicked on since (BBC).

The former Toulouse man does have all of the attributes needed to be a central midfielder, however.

He is tall, gangly, has bundles of energy and is tenacious in the tackle. His ability to carry the ball from deep is something that has really stood out when he has played at centre-back for the Hammers.

Diop’s stature and size is similar to that of Arsenal and France legend Patrick Vieira.

Of course we’re not saying that the West Ham man has the ability to be as good as Vieira but he may well be a useful option to add power, energy and strength to our play in middle of the park.

If Moyes was to attempt this change, he will obviously need to bring another centre-back to the London Stadium this month.

Diop is out of contract with West Ham in the summer of 2023. So the Hammers hierarchy need to make a big decision on the 24-year-old soon.

Surely Moyes should try him out as a midfielder as and when the situation allows for it. He clearly won’t become an elite centre-back in East London.

So switching Diop’s position to a box-to-box midfielder may well be West Ham’s last throw of the dice.
