West Ham star Flynn Downes reacts after being told something about the Liverpool game live on camera following the harsh 1-0 defeat.

West Ham missed a penalty and – like against Southampton – wasted a host of other presentable chances in the hugely frustrating loss to Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday night.

The Reds scored in the first half when Konstantinos Tsimikas was given the freedom of Merseyside by Ben Johnson to cross for former West Ham target Darwin Nunez.

The Uruguayan got inbetween Kurt Zouma and Thilo Kehrer to guide a header bouncing past Hammers ‘keeper Lukasz Fabianski.

It proved to be the winner. But it shouldn’t have been.

Besides Jarrod Bowen’s telegraphed penalty miss, Tomas Soucek spurned an absolutely golden chance to snatch a deserved point for West Ham at the death.

The ball was laid to his feet five yards out after some tricky footwork from Bowen and the goal was gaping for the big Czech.

As West Ham – and Liverpool – fans waited for the net to ripple the ball somehow ended up wide leaving Hammers boss David Moyes on his hands and knees, literally.

By this stage, new emerging West Ham hero Downes – who was excellent on his Premier League debut – was being prepped for a post-match interview with the club’s official website.

“Oh my God” were his words as West Ham star Downes reacted after what he’s told about the Liverpool game live on camera.

Downes described the result as a “tough one to take” but was gutted when interviewer Rob Pritchard pointed out that Soucek’s late effort was actually blocked by the big toe of James Milner and saved by Allison.

“We made chances, especially second half and I thought the boys were unbelievable,” Downes said on West Ham TV.

“We stuck at it and, yea, maybe we should have had more… Like I said we made chances but didn’t really capitalise on them…

“Was it a save!?” Downes says wearing a look of sheer disbelief when it is put to him just how unlucky West Ham had been with the Soucek chance at the end.

“Oh my God! I suppose that’s the luck we didn’t get tonight, on another day you get them kind of things and they go in…

“Just a gutter we couldn’t finish a chance.”

What a gutter indeed!

On to the next and West Ham must bounce back when they welcome newly-promoted Bournemouth to the London Stadium on Monday night.
