Manuel Lanzini is surely set to leave West Ham in 2023 after his recent comments and reports

West Ham United play-maker Manuel Lanzini will more than likely return to his boyhood club River Plate in the summer transfer window of 2023.

Lanzini was signed for around £9 million on a permanent deal six years ago (The Mirror), having spent the 2015/16 campaign on loan at Upton Park.

The 29-year-old has been heavily linked with an exit from the London Stadium over the past year or so with talk of a move back to his boyhood club River Plate refusing to go away.

The Argentinian ace actually returned to somewhere near his best for the Hammers last season, having spent a few years in the doldrums after suffering a serious knee injury in 2018.

The season kind of fizzled out with a bit of a whimper for both Lanzini and West Ham though, and he has made a really poor start to the 2022/23 campaign as well.

Lanzini is a hugely popular figure at the London Stadium. He really does seem to love the club and the fans love him as well.

The Hammers are allegedly open to selling Lanzini for around €12 million (£10 million), however, according to Fanatik.

The 29-year-old’s contract at the London Stadium actually expires in the summer of 2023, but the club have an option to extend that deal by a further two years. We really don’t think that Lanzini will be around that long though…

West Ham exit on the cards for Mannuel Lanzini

We firmly believe that the South American will not be a Hammers player this time next year.

After the arrival of Lucas Paqueta, Lanzini has fallen further down the attacking midfield pecking order under David Moyes at the London Stadium.

The 29-year-old recently lifted the lid on his desire to return to his boyhood club one day, when speaking to TyC Sports:

River are an institution that has nothing to envy the big clubs in Europe. They treated my entire group very well, we did well too. Obviously it makes you want to return to a club of River’s magnitude and above with the plus that is Gallardo.

Now, we would not be surprised one little bit if West Ham executed their option to extend Manuel Lanzini’s current contract, but then sold him on for a profit.

Whether River Plate would be prepared to pay £10 million plus for the Argentinian remains to be seen.

Even if West Ham sold Manuel Lanzini for £6-8 million though, we think that would be good business for the club.

It seems as though everything is set up for the 29-year-old to leave East London in the summer. It would be sad to see him leave but perhaps it’s time for both the player and the club to go their separate ways.
