West Ham United flop Jack Wilshere has joined Danish side Aarhus Gymnastikforening on short-term deal.

The 30-year-old midfielder joined the Hammers on a free transfer from Arsenal in the summer of 2018.

He endured a disastrous spell at the London Stadium, however, making only 19 appearances for West Ham before moving on.

Wilshere left the Hammers in October 2020 after a mutual agreement was reached to terminate his contract.

After leaving West Ham, the former Arsenal midfielder said he would be silly to sign for a team in a similar position to West Ham, when speaking to the Super 6 podcast:

“With my experience now, I’d be silly to sign for a team in a similar position to West Ham. When there is a relegation battle, teams want to nick a point, nick a goal and try and defend. That’s not the type of player I am. I want to enjoy my football.”

Well, well, well…

That didn’t quite work out the way you expected did it Jack!

According to Sky Sports, Wilshere has joined the Danish side up until the end of the season and he has the option of extending his deal there by a further 12 months.

In a way, the 30-year-old was right. He hasn’t joined a team in the same situation as West Ham.

Wilshere’s career has been badly impacted by injuries. It’s actually quite sad to have witnessed his decline over the past decade.

It was only in 2011 when he absolutely bossed the central midfield battle against Xavi and Andres Iniesta for Arsenal in the Champions League against Barcelona as a 19-year-old. Then, it seemed as though he had the world at his feet.

Unfortunately for Jack though, he peaked that night at the Emirates and has never touched those levels again.

Injuries certainly haven’t helped him. Hopefully he will enjoy the rest of his career without any physical problems…

He will now be playing in the Danish league and we wish him all the best. And who knows…perhaps he’s found his level now.
