One of West Ham United’s first-team players was surprisingly included in the under-21s starting lineup last night.

West Ham United under-21s drew 3-3 with Southampton yesterday, and one of the senior players was amongst the starting lineup.

However, impressing for the youth team doesn’t always equate to a long and successful career with the senior side.

Just ask Conor Coventry

Forgotten West Ham first-teamer starting for the under-21s last night was the ultimate slap in the face

Coventry was included in the starting XI for last night’s Premier League 2 clash with Southampton.

A recent report claimed that the 23-year-old would not be handed a new contract by the Hammers, and will leave the club on a free transfer in the summer of 2024.

Coventry is clearly not good enough to play at the very highest level. He won’t get anywhere near the West Ham starting XI this season.

And his inclusion in the under-21s last night was the ultimate slap in the face for him.

He’ll be fully aware that his time at West Ham is coming to an end. I just don’t understand why David Moyes didn’t push harder to sell him in the summer.

Coventry is a decent footballer but he just hasn’t got that special sauce. He’ll be playing in the Championship or a weaker foreign league next season, I have no doubts about that.

It’s a shame that things never worked out for him at the club. And the fact that he was selected for the under-21s last night tells us all we need to know about his West Ham future.
