West Ham United v Manchester City - Premier League

David Moyes will surely admit defeat with Nikola Vlasic sooner rather than later

Nikola Vlasic has experienced a really difficult debut campaign with West Ham and David Moyes now has a very tough decision to make.

Vlasic joined the Hammers from CSKA Moscow last summer for around £33 million (Evening Standard).

The 24-year-old has really struggled to establish himself at the London Stadium but in all fairness to him, he hasn’t really been given much of a chance to prove himself in the Claret and Blue.

The Croatia international has been given just 1637 minutes spread over 36 appearances (Transfermarkt). That works out at an average of just 45 minutes per game.

Vlasic clearly hasn’t impressed David Moyes so far on the pitch. When we’ve needed goals against Arsenal, Eintracht Frankfurt and Chelsea over the past couple of weeks, the Scot hasn’t even brought him on off the bench.

Despite the Croatian’s lack of game-time, he really should have shown more than he has done so far. He has been played out wide – not his natural position, but he just hasn’t done anything of note to give Moyes or the West Ham fans any kind of confidence that he will eventually come good.

David Moyes must be losing patience with Nikola Vlasic

It’s a catch 22 situation for the West Ham manager.

He’s not giving Vlasic any real playing time but every chance he gets, he fails to impress.

The 24-year-old possesses no pace whatsoever – a key attribute in the Premier League.

His confidence is clearly at absolute rock bottom as well.

The real worry concerning Vlasic is that he has looked completely out of his depth every single time he has played for the Hammers.

Moyes always beds his new signings in slowly but surely. He did the same with Said Benrahma 18 months ago. The Algerian struggled to impress for West Ham during his debut campaign in the Premier League but he showed numerous glimpses of what he was capable of.

We just haven’t seen that with Vlasic.

This summer and the early part of next season will be absolutely huge for the 24-year-old. Croatia manager Zlatko Dalić has already warned him to make the right decision with regards to playing time ahead of the World Cup in Qatar this winter.

If he fails to impress during pre-season and the early stages of next term then Moyes surely must cut his losses on Vlasic. West Ham won’t get anywhere near the £33 million fee that we paid for him.

But even if the Hammers recouped around £10-15 million it might just be in our best interest to move him on this summer. Vlasic has been a real disappointment. And the general consensus is that he just isn’t good enough to be playing Premier League football for West Ham United.
