David Moyes must be brave and move 26-year-old into central midfield role to replace Tomas Soucek vs Wolves

West Ham United manager David Moyes desperately needs to replace Tomas Soucek against Wolves on Sunday.

The Hammers are currently in the midst of a really poor run of form and our season is in danger of imploding.

Finishing inside the top four now looks like a really unrealistic target. Even the top six seems like a long shot at the moment.

In order to get our season back on track, David Moyes needs to make some big changes.

My Europa League Predictions.

Michail Antonio needs to be dropped, that has been well-documented already. Another one of the players who have been really poor recently is Tomas Soucek.

The 26-year-old central midfielder always gives his all but the new role that Moyes has given him this season in order to accommodate Declan Rice just isn’t working.

Soucek has been told to sit in front of the back four, thus rendering him completely ineffective. And rather than persist with it, Moyes needs to make a change…and fast.

Moyes should drop Soucek vs Wolves

If the Scot is to persist with Rice as a box-to-box midfielder with more attacking attacking intent then that’s fine.

He just can’t play Soucek alongside the 23-year-old. It’s time to try something different against Wolves but what options does the Scot have?

He might have to think outside the box and we think one option is screaming out at him.

Pablo Fornals played in the central midfield role earlier on in his career for Villarreal and he really impressed. The 26-year-old Spaniard played there for West Ham last season when we played Everton at the London Stadium with Declan Rice out injured.

And if you remember, Fornals excelled in the role.

He joined West Ham for £24 million in the summer of 2019 (BBC) and he has gone on to become a real fan favourite in the East End.

The former Villarreal ace is technically brilliant and his vision enables him to pick out passes that Soucek can only dream of.

Pablo lined up alongside Rice would enable us to be more creative in our play in the final third what with his ability to break the lines. We will need that against a stubborn and extremely well-drilled Wolves side.

Perhaps Moyes could go even bolder and play a 4-3-3, lining up with Rice, Fornals and Manuel Lanzini or Mark Noble in the middle.

When we play against teams with three central midfielders we often get overrun and moving Fornals centrally might solve that problem.

Even if Moyes refuses to drop Soucek, he could still move Fornals in alongside the Czech international AND Rice.

It would give us much more stability and provide the West Ham players with more of a platform from which to build from and subsequently take control of football matches.

Moyes is a big fan of Fornals’ work-rate down the left hand flank but a change is needed quickly. His performance against Everton last season proves that he has what it takes to play in the middle of the park.

The Spaniard totally dictated the tempo of the game that day.

And if Moyes plays him in central midfield for West Ham against Wolves on Sunday, he might just do the same thing and help us toward a much-needed three points.

It’s time for Soucek to be taken out of firing line. And just because we don’t have the personal to directly replace him doesn’t mean that Moyes can’t be imaginative and make something else work.
