David Moyes has made comments about competing with the top clubs, but they are completely hollow as West Ham stat leaves him nowhere to hide.

The Scot has worked wonders since returning to the London Stadium as Hammers manager for the second time back in December 2019, there is no denying that.

Moyes has transformed West Ham from relegation fodder into perennial challengers for the European places.

That does not mean that the 59-year-old is immune from criticism though.

There is one thing about Moyes that drives me crazy – his negative approach to the away games against the so-called big six teams.

Since the Scot returned to West Ham, his team have taken just two points from 18 away games against the big six.

There is simply no excuse for that. It proves that his way of setting up his side away from home just doesn’t work. Had he shown more ambition, I can almost guarantee that the Hammers would have got more of a return than just two points.

And in the home games during that period, we’ve taken just 22 points from a possible 54. It really isn’t good enough is it?

In my opinion, it is that particular statistic that renders Moyes’s latest comments as completely meaningless…

David Moyes hollow comments leave West Ham boss nowhere to hide

The Scot has been speaking to the media ahead of our clash with Liverpool at Anfield tonight.

And Moyes responded when asked if he believes that his side can compete with the likes of Liverpool, as quoted by WHUFC.com:

I’m confident that if we can play well and get our best players on the pitch, we’re able to challenge the best teams. We did that last year, and I thought we were competitive against them but what we didn’t do was beat the teams we should have been beating. I hope we can be competitive against the so-called best teams again this year.

I’m sorry, but these comments have absolutely zero substance to them.

How on earth can Moyes claim that West Ham were able to challenge the big teams last year when we lost all six games against the so-called traditional big six?

Moyes’s comments are hollow and misguided…at best. The first sign of a manager who is feeling the pressure is when he starts to come out with utter rubbish. And those comments above fall exactly into that category.

The Scot needs to look at the way he has approached these games in the past and come to the realisation that perhaps it isn’t the correct way to do things.

David Moyes has done a lot of good work at West Ham, but I just can’t allow comments like the one he made above to go by without holding him to account.

It will be interesting to see how the Scot sets his side up at Liverpool tonight. One thing’s for sure, if West Ham sit back, defend and invite pressure on to us, there will be only one outcome. And it won’t be a good one.
