The Alphonse Areola answer is so very simple after he looked rather shaky against Genk in the Europa League on Thursday night.
The 28-year-old goalkeeper kept his third clean sheet in a row for the Hammers on Thursday.
His performance was far from convincing, however.
The 6ft 5in stopper looked shaky to say the least.
He was hesitant coming off his line numerous times and just didn’t look very comfortable.
There is a simple solution though. Areola is a top-class goalkeeper and WILL become our number one at some point in the near future.
Alphonse Areola answer is so very simple
The French ace simply needs more regular game-time. It must be so hard to come into the side every now and again. He cannot be expected to command his area with authority when he’s playing once a month.
Areola joined West Ham on a season-long loan from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.
David Moyes is expected to make the Frenchman’s move to the London Stadium a permanent one next summer for around £11 million (Wyn Foot).
Moyes clearly sees Lukasz Fabianski as his number one Premier League goalkeeper at the moment.
So Areola will have to be patient. And the West Ham fans need to be patient with him as well.
Whenever he does play, he might not be at his best. Firstly, if Areola is just given Europa League and Carabao Cup games, he probably won’t have Kurt Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna in front of him.
Secondly, like outfield players, goalkeepers need regular action to get up to the intense speed of games at the very highest level.
So the answer is simple.
Either Moyes must play the French ace more regularly or we as fans need to be very patient with him this season.
There is no doubt that Areola will be West Ham’s number one goalkeeper next season.
So let’s give him time to adapt before making any judgements.
