‘Absolutely ridiculous’ were the words of Jamie Carragher as he sent a strong message to West Ham over David Moyes.

At the start of the season and several times since, David Moyes has called for patience and time to mould his new-look West Ham side.

Now Hammers fans are seeing why.

Another abject performance and approach against Crystal Palace resulted in a last gasp 2-1 defeat on Sunday.

Dark clouds have started to gather over Moyes’ head of late as West Ham struggle to live up to loftier expectations after two years of rapid progress.

After spending over £170m in the summer on eight new signings, it is only natural West Ham fans were hopeful, excited and many expectant having seen the team challenge for the top six and shine in Europe for the last couple of seasons.

Things are not going to plan in the Premier League, though, with West Ham just two points off the bottom three one week out from the World Cup break.

Moyes’ cause is not being helped by the fact West Ham’s decline is not consigned to this season alone. The Hammers have just 13 wins in their last 41 Premier League matches across this season and last.

Many supporters are starting to call for Moyes to be sacked.

But others feel the boss should be given time off the back of the marvellous job he has done since returning to east London in 2020 – particularly having brought in so many new players in the summer.

Sky Sports pundit Carragher is firmly in the latter camp.

‘Absolutely ridiculous’ were the words of Carragher as he sends a strong message to West Ham over David Moyes and his future at the club.

“You’ve got a manager in David Moyes who I think when he went into West Ham it was a similar club to Everton,” Carragher said on The Overlap Fan Debate.

“And he was at Everton for 10 of 11 years and consistently punching above their weight and getting to Europe, that’s what he’s done at West Ham. But every one of those Everton seasons wasn’t fifth, sixth or seventh. They’d have the odd finish of 12th one season.

“At that time with Bill Kenwright in charge and even the supporters, they were always behind him, there was no panic or histrionics. And I think – you know West Ham (better than me) – maybe there was a few boos yesterday but I don’t think there should ever be that panic when you’ve got David Moyes as the manager, still believe.

“They’ll be fine, they might not finish sixth or seventh like they did last season, it might be a season where they finish 12th or 10th. West Ham have had a million of those seasons – they won’t (be fighting relegation) I can absolutely guarantee you they won’t fight a relegation battle with the players that they’ve got and the manager that they’ve got, they won’t.

“What they need to do is have David Moyes, he’ll stabilise the club – for years West Ham have fought relegation – Moyes will be a manager who will always keep you up, I know you want more than that of course, but it might be a season where they finish 10th or 12th – don’t panic, don’t get carried away because the following season you’ll probably finish eighth, I think he’s just replicating everything that he did at Everton.

“And I think if there’s any talk of David Moyes leaving West Ham, I think it’s absolutely ridiculous.”

Carragher will be pleased to hear then that the man who matters most in terms of Moyes’ future at West Ham – majority stakeholder David Sullivan – is not panicking one bit after speaking to Hammers News this week.
