West Ham United have a buyback clause on one of the young players we sold earlier this year.
Sunderland signed Pierre Ekwah from West Ham United in January of this year for a minimal fee on a long-term contract until 2027.

It seemed like a strange move from Hammers boss David Moyes to sell him at the time because the 21-year-old had really impressed every single time he represented the youth teams. He looked good during pre-season last summer as well.

Many West Ham fans were very surprised that Ekwah was allowed to leave the London Stadium, especially for just a nominal fee, with some outlets claiming that Sunderland actually didn’t pay a fee at all for the midfielder (SI).
However, all is good it seems…
West Ham buyback clause and sell-on % should make fans feel at ease
According to Roker Report, the Hammers inserted both buyback and sell-on clauses into the deal that saw Ekwah move to the Black Cats seven months ago.
That’s a good job because he has been on fire in the Championship for Sunderland. He scored two great goals yesterday during his side’s 5-0 win over Southampton.
Here’s his second strike against the Saints at the Stadium of Light…what a goal!
The former West Ham midfielder’s stats make for pretty impressive reading as well.
In five league appearances in the Championship so far this season, Ekwah has averaged two tackles, 1.6 interceptions and one clearance per game. He has made 52.2 passes per match and has recorded a mightily impressive completion rate of 90% (Who Scored).
The 21-year-old looks like the real deal, he really does. If he continues to make progress, he’ll definitely be good enough to play in the Premier League, there’s no doubt about that.
And with West Ham having included buyback and sell-on clauses into the deal that took him to Sunderland, we’re in a win-win situation.
