Hammers boss David Moyes was clearly desperate to sign a top-class left-back in the summer.

Eventually, the Scot settled on signing Emerson Palmieri from Chelsea, but it’s clear to see that he wanted a younger model really…

Fabrizio Romano told the The Here We Go podcast that Malacia was all set to join Lyon before West Ham tried to hijack the deal.

Interestingly enough, Manchester United then hijacked the transfer:

“All the fans know that it was done with Olympique Lyonnais, it was a Friday and it was done for the player to travel on the Monday. Then Manchester United jumped into it on the Sunday night, and so on Monday they changed the story and signed Tyrell Malacia, who is doing great now with Erik ten Hag, Ten Hag was really happy with his potential signing. But I can reveal that on the Saturday, West Ham – they were looking for a left back before signing Emerson Palmieri – had direct contact with Malacia. It was a direct contact also between David Moyes and the player’s side, but the player had his decision made on Lyon, so he said no to West Ham. Then on Sunday night, Manchester United appeared and signed Malacia.”

Malacia has made an exceptional start to life at Old Trafford.

The five-capped capped Holland international looks like a brilliant player and he would have been a superb addition for the Hammers.

Hopefully Emerson will end up being a top-class signing for the East London outfit.

It’s just a shame that Manchester United beat West Ham to the signing of Tyrell Malacia in the summer. He already seems perfectly suited to Premier League football.
