Ex Hammers fire serious deadline day warning to West Ham owners and Moyes

Merson was a guest in the studio during Sky Sports News’s coverage of deadline day.

It has been one of the most quiet transfer windows for some time.

The Covid pandemic has been blamed for much of that.

Alves, Benrahma and Lingard in at West Ham

West Ham brought in young defender Frederik Ibsen Alves for £1million from Silkeborg. And the club made Said Benrahma’s move permanent for £25m last week, six months earlier than planned.

That paved the way for West Ham to sign Jesse Lingard on loan from Manchester United.

Many West Ham fans have been angered by the lack of a striker signing after the club sold Sebastien Haller to Ajax for £20million.

And some sceptical supporters have questioned whether Lingard was needed.

Now Sky Sports pundit Merson has hailed the signing of Lingard.

Merson raves about Lingard’s West Ham move, says Hammers have had the best window

And when asked which Premier League club has had the best window, Merson responded ‘West Ham because of Lingard’.

“I think good move for the player and good move for West Ham,” Merson told Sky Sports News.

“If he can find his form (it’s a great signing) – you’re talking three years ago you picked an England team and he’d be in the first four or five names in the team.

“I think he’s a good player. Coming away from United and being at West Ham he’ll take a lot more onto him.

‘Lingard will give them that bit extra’

“People go ‘Oh no assists, no goals” but I just think he was a bit overawed sometimes, he was giving the ball to other people and when they were assisting it was his ball (that set the chance up in the first place).

“I think it’s a good signing for West Ham, I like him, I do like him and hopefully he gets his career back online because he’s a good player.

“I watched them yesterday (against Liverpool) and they looked a bit lost. Lingard will give them that bit extra.

“If he does well there will be a few clubs looking and thinking why weren’t we in for Lingard’.”
