A World Cup winners medal with West Ham links is guaranteed no matter what happens as Nayef Aguerd and Alphonse Areola clash.

France take on Morocco in the semi-final of the World Cup this evening to decide who will meet Argentina in the final on Sunday.

It means West Ham – who famously won England’s only ever World Cup back in 1966 – are guaranteed representation in the final.

Then it will be down to whether Areola, who is back-up goalkeeper to Hugo Lloris, or Aguerd can see off Argentina depending on which West Ham star’s side progresses.

But in actual fact a World Cup winners medal with West Ham links is guaranteed no matter what happens as Aguerd and Areola clash.

As most Hammers fans will know, former West Ham full-back Lionel Scaloni is the Argentina manager.

He has actually done a superb job, leading Lionel Messi and co to the final after a shocking defeat to Saudi Arabia in their opening match.

Scaloni was actually a very good right-back for West Ham and helped the club reach that famous FA Cup final in 2006.

Unfortunately for Scaloni and West Ham it was his poor clearance in the dying moments which found its way to the right foot of the unplayable Steven Gerrard 30 yards out and the rest, as they say, is history.

Scaloni says he still thinks about that moment today, admitting he is tormented by the memory.

“I lost an FA Cup, it was partly my fault because I didn’t clear well, and life changed,” Scaloni recalls (Vavel).

His links to West Ham have been mentioned to UK TV viewers during coverage of every Argentina game to far and will undoubtedly be brought up again in the final.

There he will meet either Areola’s France or Aguerd’s Morocco.

And that means one of West Ham duo Areola, Aguerd or former star Scaloni will be wearing a World Cup winners medal around their neck come Sunday night.

It’s not quite Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters but it is certainly significant for the Hammers nontheless.
