West Ham boss David Moyes has told Gareth Southgate to drop a Chelsea star for an Arsenal ace if England are to win the World Cup.

London rivals West Ham, Arsenal and Chelsea have a host of stars at the World Cup in Qatar.

For league leaders Arsenal, the break probably came at the worst possible time. For struggling West Ham and Chelsea it may well be a blessing in disguise.

West Ham captain Declan Rice is one of the first names – after Harry Kane – on the England teamsheet.

Chelsea academy graduate Conor Gallagher – who was linked with a move to West Ham in the summer – was one of the surprise names in the England squad. But he has clearly been brought as back-up for Hammers star Rice.

Beyond that there is always fervent debate around Southgate’s team selections in other areas of the pitch.

And much of that debate centres around Arsenal and Chelsea players. Whether it is making a case for Gunner Aaron Ramsdale in goal, the decision to leave Reece James at home or who should play when it comes to the likes of Ben White, Mason Mount, Raheem Sterling and Bukayo Saka.

One man who thinks he has the answer to one of those big decisions is West Ham’s under pressure manager.

West Ham boss Moyes has told Southgate to drop Chelsea star Sterling for Arsenal ace Saka if England are to win the World Cup.

The Scot told The Times that Kane and Rice are two of the best in the world in their positions. But he feels Southgate may need to tweak Chelsea’s Sterling for Arsenal’s Saka to get the Three Lions roaring again.

West Ham boss David Moyes calls for Gareth Southgate to drop Chelsea star for Arsenal ace if England are to win the World Cup

“I see Harry Kane being as good as any striker, I see Declan Rice being as good as any midfielder in the world,” Moyes told The Times.

“Gareth has players who can go head to head with anyone and have played in the biggest competitions. Yes, England lost form this year but that can happen. I don’t think much has to change for them to be back on track.

“Maybe it’s just a case of finding a little freshness: bringing Bukayo Saka in for Raheem Sterling, a small tweak like that. Gareth has faced ridiculous criticism and is doing exactly the right thing by sticking to the players and principles that have got him to this point.”

Moyes will have his nose put out of joint by home truth from insider.
