Two West Ham United stars have been named in the Europa League team of the week.
West Ham have taken to Europa League group stage football like a duck to water so far.
The Hammers are flying right now.
David Moyes’s side have enjoyed a wonderful start to the season. In truth the Hammers have enjoyed a wonderful last 19 months under their much-loved Scottish manager.
Three wins in a week – away at Man United in the Carabao Cup, then Leeds in the Premier League and a 2-0 victory over Rapid Wien in the Europa League on Thursday night – have West Ham fans on cloud nine.
And to add the icing on the cake, two West Ham stars have been named in the Europa League team of the round.
Football analytics experts WhoScored – formerly Opta – announced its best XI from the 16 matches.
And West Ham stars Declan Rice and Ben Johnson were named in midfield and at right-back respectively.
Rice scored a superb 8.1/10 while Johnson registered 7.5.
It is a real feather in the cap not just for West Ham but the club’s famed academy.
Both players came through the ranks before emerging as first team stars.
Johnson making the side is all the more impressive given it was his first ever European start.
With Michail Antonio the current Premier League player of the month, West Ham’s players are at least getting the recognition they deserve.
West Ham face Genk next in the Europa League at the London Stadium.
Victory over what is considered the weakest team in the group will put West Ham on a perfect nine points and edging closer to making the last 16 knockout stages.
The Hammers have been installed as the new favourites to win the competition.
Moyes’s side do face a tough fixture schedule after the international break, though.
And West Ham’s squad will undoubtedly be fully tested.
