West Ham were today drawn to face Ligue 1 side Lyon next and know that – should they progress – they will face either Eintracht Frankfurt or Barcelona in the semi-finals.

Lyon are a historic club and another mouthwatering tie is in prospect.

Any West Ham fans who followed the group stages closely will know Lyon were the team who secured the most points with 16 from their six group stage matches -five wins and a draw.

But ex Hammer Joe Cole has exciting news for West Ham after drawing Lyon in the Europa League quarter-finals.

The academy of football graduate, who knows all about Lyon having had a spell at French side Lille, reassured West Ham that their next opponents are not the side they once were and certainly not one the Hammers should fear (BT Sport).

“I’m absolutely delighted (with West Ham’s draw),” Cole told BT Sport.

“It could have been the glamour tie against Barcelona, and I think Rangers got the plum tie with Braga.

“But I think Lyon are struggling in France. They’re not what they were, and with the carrot of a Barcelona semi-final it sets it up lovely.

“It’s a lovely place to go. Brilliant stadium, history, and the West Ham fans would be booking their trip already I would imagine.”
