Hammer blow as brilliant West Ham star Manuel Lanzini will be banned for the club’s big quarter-final after the Hammers made it through.

There will be a few thousand sore heads when West Ham fans wake up this morning.

And with good reason after the Hammers sealed their place as Europa League quarter-finalists with an epic 2-1 aggregate win over Spanish side Sevilla.

It was West Ham’s biggest match yet at the London Stadium. And David Moyes’s side delivered yet again.

The Hammers stepped up to the plate when it mattered most with goals from Tomas Soucek and Andriy Yarmolenko ensuring West Ham are in the hat for the draw.

To a man, West Ham’s players were absolutely superb against the second best side in Spain and the most successful club in this competition’s history.

This West Ham team will go down as heroes and rightly so. And it says everything that it would be extremely difficult to pick a man of the match from the victory.

But midfield ace Manuel Lanzini would be big shout after an absolute midfield masterclass.

The little Argentine was vital to West Ham with his ball retention, intelligent positioning and incisive, line-breaking runs and passing.

Blow as brilliant West Ham star Manuel Lanzini banned for quarter-final game

So it is the only blot on the copybook that brilliant West Ham star Lanzini will be banned for the first quarter-final game.

West Ham will find out who they will face in the next round – and the semi-finals should they get through – when the draw is made this lunchtime.

But Lanzini will not be available for the first leg having picked up his third Europa League booking against Sevilla last night.

As reported by Hammers News ahead of the game, Lanzini risked a one-game ban if he was booked having picked up a yellow in the group stage and one in the reverse fixture in Seville.

And he duly picked one up with a foul which means that suspension will be served in the next match.

David Moyes will worry about that when the time comes.

But it is a real blow given how important Lanzini has become to the function of this West Ham side.
