West Ham United have been heavily linked with a move for Rangers outcast Alfredo Morelos (Football Insider).
The Sun reported during lockdown that West Ham boss David Moyes wants the Gers’s Colombian striker in this window.
Football Insider claimed West Ham could now get the Rangers’s 77-goal maverick for a cut-price £12million – due to the financial impact of the global health crisis – after ‘reigniting interest’.
But things went quiet after it emerged West Ham boss Moyes has no money to spend (Claret & Hugh).
No way back for West Ham target Morelos at Rangers?
There appears to be no way back for the Colombian at Rangers, though, due to his recent behaviour in a bid to force a move away.
That could be good news for West Ham’s hopes of getting the striker. But it comes with the obvious caveat that it may not be all plain sailing if they do.
West Ham fans love a maverick. Just ask Paolo Di Canio.
But Moyes will also be wary of players coming in and ruining the excellent team spirit he has reportedly fostered since his return to West Ham.
Morelos has reportedly been in a sulk ever since missing out on a move to Lille.
The 24-year-old had looked to replace Victor Osimhen at Lille after his big money move to Napoli (Sky Sports).
But the French side signed Canadian forward Jonathan David from Genk instead.
Boyd and McFadden savage Morelos for sulking to force move
Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has said Morelos has looked unfit and not focused of late.
And as a result he has been frozen out at Ibrox.
With both Moyes’s and Morelos’s options dwindling, West Ham may have no option but to take a chance on the fiery forward.
But his signing comes with a warning from former Ranger star Kris Boyd and ex Scottish international James McFadden.
“It is one of those things that is really starting to annoy me now (the Morelos situation),” ex Rangers striker Boyd told the Scottish Football Podcast.
“We have said for a number of months now that Alfredo Morelos, when he is playing well, he can be a handful.
“But the other side of this is when he is not playing, he can be a hindrance… I think his attitude has been disgraceful the last few weeks and for me personally, top players when they get a move work harder, they show their qualities and that has not been the case with Morelos.
“Now he (Gerrard) can get him out of the road and if he is not pulling his weight in training, like every other player, if you are not pulling your weight in training, then you should not be anywhere near the first team. And I think that is now the case, Gerrard has had enough of him and it is now up to Rangers to go and agree a deal with someone.
Next stop West Ham?
“I know the Lille saga keeps on rolling on, but it is going to have to be dealt with because the sooner Morelos is out the building, the better because he is going to be more of a hindrance now because his attitude over the last few weeks has been nothing short of appalling.”
Former Scotland international McFadden also weighed in on the Morelos situation.
“Alfredo Morelos hasn’t looked the same since he came back, probably since January actually,” McFadden told Sky Sports.
“This season he doesn’t look the same player. He looks unfit, he looks unwilling to work for the team and he doesn’t even look like he wants to score goals. To me it looks like the club want him out and the player wants to leave, but I just think he should show a better attitude and just work hard until that move comes.”
Moyes will be tempted by a goal record which suggests the forward can do it at the top level.
Morelos has scored 79 goals in 142 games in all competitions for Rangers since signing for the club in 2017.
And a large number of those have been in European competition.
