West Ham signing Goncalo Cardoso now seems like an incredibly strange move

West Ham signed Goncalo Cardoso from Boavista in the summer of 2019 for around £3 million (Football Insider).

Manuel Pellegrini brought the 20-year-old to the London Stadium as backup for his central defensive options.

The young Portuguese defender is still yet to play a senior game for the club.

And since David Moyes replaced Pellegrini in December last year, Cardoso has fallen even further down the pecking order.

Bringing the Portuguese starlet to West Ham now seems like an incredibly strange move.

The Hammers have some exceptional young central defenders amongst their ranks including the likes of Aji Alese and Jamal Baptiste.

We also had Issa Diop, Angelo Ogbonna and Fabian Balbuena already at the club.

ExWHUemployee claimed last week that David Moyes and his staff haven’t been impressed with the 20-year-old whatsoever.

So it does make you wonder what Pellegrini saw in him in the first place.

The only saving grace is that we only spent £3 million on acquiring his services. That being said, Cardoso does now seem to be like a totally unnecessary signing.

Perhaps it will be in everyone’s best interests to move the 20-year-old on either in January or next summer.

Cardoso clearly faces a bleak future in east London. And his days at the London Stadium appear to be numbered.
