West Ham look set for a timely seven-figure kick-back as former striker Gianluca Scamacca closes in on a big return.

Tattooed striker Gianluca Scamacca still divides opinion among West Ham fans to this day.

West Ham paid £22.5m to sign Scamacca from Sassuolo with an additional £5m payable if he met certain clauses.

But the move simply did not work out as the Italy striker or the Hammers would have hoped.

Bouts of illness, injuries, homesickness and a clear lack of research on the type of striker Scamacca is and what he would bring to the team left both the player and manager at the time David Moyes frustrated.

With Callum Wilson and Niclas Fullkrug set to depart and uncertainty regarding the future of Taty Castellanos following West Ham’s relegation to the Championship, the club’s seemingly perennial search for a striker begins again this summer.

With money set to be tight, the squad overhaul that will take place this summer will be no easy task.

There is some good news for West Ham on the transfer front for a change, though.

And some rare savvy from the Hammers board looks set to pay off.

Because West Ham are in line for a seven-figure kick-back as Scamacca closes in on a return.

When Scamacca was sold to Atalanta for around £27m three summers ago, many fans felt the club gave up on him too soon.

The truth of the matter was the 6ft 5in forward was desperate to return to his homeland having failed to settle in England.

A marginal profit on the deal represented decent enough business for the Hammers in the circumstances.

But Hammers News exclusively revealed at the time that West Ham included a 10 per cent sell-on clause in the Scamacca deal.

That clause applies should Atalanta sell Scamacca before the expiration of the five-year contract he signed with the Serie A side on leaving West Ham.

And that’s exactly what is about to happen.

Because Scamacca looks set to join his first – and boyhood – club Roma in a deal worth at least £30m according to reports from the likes of Roma Press in Italy.

That should mean West Ham are going to get a small windfall of £3m from the sale.

But that is not to be sniffed at given the club’s dire financial situation.

Some sell-on clauses only relate to any profit made on a deal.

If that were the case the Hammers would only bank around £300k.

But Hammers News believes it is straight sell-on clause, which should mean the club’s coffers are boosted by around £3m.

It is certainly handy given West Ham owe other clubs a staggering £196m in transfer instalments after filing £104m losses in their latest accounts.

The return to Roma would also set up a reunion for Scamacca with the man who brought him to Atalanta, manager Gian Piero Gasperini.

The former Hammer could be joined in Rome by a current West Ham star if reports are to be believed.

Because Roma are said to be plotting a move to sign winger Crysencio Summerville this summer.

West Ham are said to be demanding between £30-40m for the Dutchman but may be minded to hold off on any sale to see if he can add to his value at the World Cup with Holland.
