West Ham United have allegedly made an enquiry about signing talented Everton centre-back Mason Holgate this summer.

That’s according to a report from 90min who claim that the Hammers are eyeing a move to sign the Everton star as cover for Nayef Aguerd.

The 26-year-old joined West Ham from Rennes in a £30 million deal in June (Sky Sports) but was forced to undergo ankle surgery after sustaining a serious injury during our pre-season friendly with Glasgow Rangers last week.

It really was a Hammer blow for the player, David Moyes and the fans.

And Moyes is now seemingly intent on bolstering his centre-back ranks with Aguerd set to miss at least six weeks of action and perhaps as many as 12.

West Ham make Mason Holgate enquiry

According to a report from 90min, the Hammers have asked the Toffees about signing the 25-year-old central defender.

Holgate can also operate at right-back and central midfield, and that will undoubtedly appeal to Moyes.

We think the Everton ace would be a terrific signing for West Ham.

Holgate stands at 6ft tall, so he isn’t the tallest of centre-backs. The 25-year-old has an incredible leap though and he is very fast indeed. He’s strong in the challenge as well.

Holgate made 25 Premier League appearances for Everton last season and bagged two goals and one assist (Who Scored).

During those outings, the Toffees ace averaged 1.4 tackles, one interception and 3.7 clearances per game. He also won an average of 2.5 aerial duels per match (Who Scored).

He really is a very good all-round defender.

There is a huge problem though…Everton value Holgate at around £40 million (Football Insider).

The 25-year-old is still under contract at Goodison Park until the summer of 2025 so Everton are in a very strong position.

And we just can’t see West Ham paying anywhere near £40 million for Holgate this summer, in spite of his obvious quality.
