West Ham are interested in sign Dynamo Moscow’s defensive midfielder Daniil Fomin in the January transfer window according to a report from Russian media outlet Sport Express.

Hammers boss David Moyes has a lot of work to do in the transfer market this month.

Last night’s bench against Norwich was evidence of just how thin the West Ham squad is.

And it could be argued that the Scot actually needs to bolster in nigh on every single department of his squad.

We all know that the additions of a centre-forward, a centre-back and a left-back will be at the very top of Moyes’s wish-list in the January window.

It seems as though a new central midfielder could be on West Ham’s radar as well though. Perhaps Moyes just doesn’t fancy Alex Kral?

Or maybe the Scot believes that we need even more strength in depth. Either way, the Russian media believe that a defensive midfielder is definitely on the Hammers’ shopping list this month…

West Ham eye January swoop for Dynamo Moscow midfielder Daniil Fomin

Sport Express claims that the Hammers could be set to battle it out with Newcastle for the eight-capped Russia international’s signature this month.

The 24-year-old is an incredibly versatile player.

He is a defensive midfielder by trade but he can also operate at centre-back and even in a more advanced role.

Fomin has bagged seven goals and three assists in 19 games for Dynamo Moscow so far this season (Transfermarkt) – incredible numbers for a deep-lying midfielder.

In 17 league outings for Dynamo this term, the 24-year-old has averaged 1.1 tackles and one interception per game. He has made 41.5 passes per match on average and has recorded an impressive completion rate of 80.9% (Who Scored).

The Russian ace is a very good all-round player and is very energetic whilst being good with the ball at his feet as well. He has an impressive engine and a tireless work-rate.

Despite his tender years, he is very highly experienced in playing at the top level for a sustained period of time. He has the kind of attributes needed to succeed in the Premier League.

Fomin certainly has the talent required to make the jump up from Russia to England. And if he matches his ability with hard work behind the scenes, he could go on to become a truly top-class midfield player in the Premier League.

Whether Dynamo Moscow will be open to selling the 24-year-old to West Ham in January remains to be seen, however. He is still under contract with the Russian outfit until the summer of 2025.

So the Hammers will undoubtedly have to make a rather substantial offer for Fomin, if we are to have any chance of prising him away from the VTB Arena this month.

However, it must be noted that David Moyes has far more pressing issues to handle this month other than signing another central midfielder.

The Scot absolutely has to get his transfer business 100% spot on this month. We have a genuine chance to make a big splash in the Premier League and in Europe this season.

And Moyes must get the additions of a striker and a defender over the line before doing anything else.

Fomin would be a fine addition for West Ham, but perhaps this is one that can wait until the summer.
