West Ham United are plotting a move to sign a really talented attacker in January, but he won’t come cheap.

The January transfer window will be a vitally important one for West Ham boss David Moyes, with further attacking reinforcements required at the London Stadium.

The Hammers have come unstuck over the past couple of months, with Michail Antonio bang out of form, and now injured after he picked up a knee problem whilst on international duty with Jamaica.

As a result, Jarrod Bowen has been shoe-horned into the centre-forward role with Lucas Paqueta out wide on the left.

Because of so many players operating in unfamiliar roles, our attacking play has been clunky at times. And with that in mind, getting a top-class winger who can also play through the middle should be one of Moyes’s main priorities this winter…

West Ham told fee need to sign 26-year-old forward in January

Steven Bergwijn is said to be firmly on the Hammers’ radar, and Ajax manager John van ‘t Schip refused to rule out the possibility of the former Tottenham man moving to the London Stadium this winter.

The fleet-footed attacker can play anywhere along the front-line. He is just as good on either wing as he is when playing as a striker.

And Ajax Showtime are claiming that West Ham will have to pay €40 million (£35 million), if we want to bring the Holland international back to London in the January transfer window.

That sounds like decent value for a player with Bergwijn’s quality to me.

Tottenham signed him from PSV Eindhoven in January 2020 for around £30 million including add-ons (ESPN). He then moved to Ajax for £26 million two-and-a-half years later (Sky Sports), after failing to succeed with Spurs.

The 26-year-old bagged just eight goals and 10 assists in 83 games for Tottenham, and he’s faired far better with Ajax, with 22 goals and nine assists to his name in just 63 outings (Transfermarkt).

Bergwijn possesses really impressive pace, supreme technical ability and he has a real keen eye for a killer pass and a goal.

Signing the 26-year-old for £35 million in the January transfer window should be an absolute no-brainer for West Ham as far as I’m concerned.

Whether or not the Hammers owners agree with that notion remains to be seen though.
