West Ham have lined up their Angelo Ogbonna replacement with a move planned for ‘giant’ Wigan defender Charlie Hughes claims a journalist.

Angelo Ogbonna has been a superb servant for West Ham and one of the biggest bargains in the club’s modern history.

After signing for £8.5m from Juventus in 2015, Ogbonna has gone on to make over 260 appearances for West Ham and counting.

Like a fine Italian wine, Ogbonna seems to have only got better with age.

But he turns 36 at the end of the season with many expecting this to be his last as a Hammer.

Konstantinos Mavropanos was signed by David Moyes in the summer and looks an excellent acquisition.

And it seems the Scot now has his eye on Ogbonna’s long-term replacement according to Alan Nixon, a reporter who has connections to the West Ham boss.

Hughes, who started out in the Man City academy before joining Liverpool’s, has been a standout player and leader for Wigan at just 19.

The centre-back is very comfortable on the ball and has been known to also play in defensive midfield if needed.

Hammers aware of rival Prem interest in Hughes so move could happen ‘fast’ claims reporter

Writing on his Patreon page, Nixon says West Ham are seriously eyeing Hughes and Wigan will be powerless to stop the move, which could happen ‘fast’ as the east Londoners are aware of rival interest.

“Hammers have been sending top scouts to watch the defender in League One action and see him as a possible long term project,” Nixon says on his Patreon page.

“Hammers know there is rival Premier League interest and could move in fast. Wigan would have to sell at the right price as they are likely to be stuck at their level next season.

“Hughes stayed loyal to Wigan but the chance to progress and have a go with one of the top squads around is bound to appeal to him.”
