A West Ham insider has refuted Nayef Aguerd claims doing the rounds and delivers a concerning transfer window warning.
As always seems to be the way with West Ham transfers, they turn into something of a saga.
While many other clubs appear to get deals done for new signings quickly and efficiently, West Ham’s transactions tend to drag.
It is getting the players Moyes wants signed that is important, though, not how long it takes.
And it is being widely reported that the capture of Rennes centre-back Aguerd will be confirmed this week.
Personal terms are allegedly close to being finalised between the Hammers and the player and it has been suggested that the fee we are paying for Aguerd is only £20 million.
That’s according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth who claimed last night that a £20m deal to bring Aguerd to the London Stadium is imminent.
That would be an absolute bargain in the modern market as anyone who has seen his statistics or watched him play will attest.
West Ham insider refutes Nayef Aguerd claims and delivers concerning transfer window warning
But a West Ham insider refutes the Aguerd fee claims and has delivered a rather concerning transfer window warning.
The Aguerd fee is actually said to be £30m and it is suggested that it will be the most West Ham pay out for any single player in the summer window.
That’s according to a high level West Ham inside source speaking exclusively to Claret and Hugh.
The insider has told C&H that Moyes sees Aguerd as his key summer signing at £30m.
“David Moyes sees central defender Nayef Aguerd as his marquee signing of the summer…once it happens…” C&H report.
“Aguerd’s arrival has been expected for several weeks but we understand that the widely reported fee of €30 million (£25m) is on the low side with our Hammers insider explaining the fee is in fact closer to €35 million (£30m).
“He has become a very big deal for the manager despite us currently having Kurt Zouma, Craig Dawson, Angelo Ogbonna and Issa Diop available at central defence. In fact our insider claimed that he would be the marquee signing of the summer declaring: “He’s the manager’s number one summer pick at 35m euros.”
With West Ham desperately in need of at least one new striker and a central midfielder among several other positions in a big rebuild, that news is concerning to say the least.
Particularly given quality players in those positions tend to command much higher transfer fees.
It could also be something of a bluff from the Hammers to ensure they are not held to ransom when going in for signings. If that is the case then it may be a wise tactic.
Let’s take it one signing at a time, though, and getting Aguerd over the line will be a positive start to the window with 10 weeks of the window remaining.
