Newcastle swoop late to beat West Ham to Alphonse Areola signing but David Moyes still holds ace card

Newcastle have swooped late to try and beat West Ham to the signing of Alphonse Areola but David Moyes still holds the ace card.

There has been increased speculation that West Ham will complete the signing of Areola after his impressive loan spell at the London Stadium last season.

But interest from newly minted Newcastle United has loomed large over proceedings of late.

A few days ago The Daily Mail claimed Newcastle entering the race for Areola had stalled discussions between West Ham and the Frenchman.

Moyes used Areola as his number two/cup goalkeeper behind the ageing Lukasz Fabianski last season.

And that has sparked fears Areola may choose Newcastle over West Ham if he is given assurances that he will be number one at St James’s Park.

According to a recent report from West Ham insiders Claret and Hugh, West Ham were also willing to give Areola assurances he can be the number one.

Nevertheless the Newcastle interest has been more than a distraction for West Ham fans anxious to see the giant World Cup winner come to east London permanently from PSG.

Earlier on Tuesday afternoon, West Ham were said to still be embroiled in talks with Areola regarding his proposed permanent move from Paris Saint-Germain.

Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth claims the Hammers will exercise their £11 million option to buy Areola once personal terms have been agreed with the goalkeeper.

But worryingly, RMC Sport in France are reporting as breaking news that Newcastle have initiated proceedings to sign France goalkeeper Areola.

Get French Football News are also reporting Newcastle’s late swoop to beat West Ham to the Areola signing but Moyes still holds the ace card.

Because the reports rightly point out that West Ham still have first option on Areola – as confirmed by West Ham when he joined on loan last summer – until the end of June.

That gives West Ham just over two weeks to get the deal sorted in order to ward off the threat of Newcastle.

However, we all know money talks in football.

And if the Magpies let it be known to PSG and Areola’s representatives that they are willing to beat what West Ham are offering financially then the player could quite easily reject the Hammers in favour of a move to Newcastle.

We can only hope West Ham are well down the road with this one and get it over the line.

Because at 29 years of age Areola could easily be West Ham’s new number one goalkeeper for the next five or six seasons.
