A West Ham insider with links to the Hammers boardroom has dropped a tantalising hint of last gasp mega transfer but chances look slim.

West Ham fans are feeling seriously frustrated by the lack of transfer activity in the January window with so much to play for in the second half of the season.

The Hammers are in the mix for the top six, have the Europa League last 16 to look forward to and should make the fifth round of the FA Cup after the winter break.

But with less than four days until the window closes, the Hammers have thus far failed to bring in any new signings.

That’s despite West Ham boss Moyes insisting he wants to bring in at least two players and revealing he has the full backing of West Ham co-owners David Sullivan, Daniel Kretinsky and David Gold to do so.

Fans covet a striker most. Indeed Michail Antonio has even admitted he could do with some help up front (Standard Sport).

Moyes conceded he has been trying to sign a forward for two years without success.

And time is running out for that to change.

Last week the Scot admitted he may wait until the summer and go big to get the players he wants if the deals are not possible this month.

But fans have been quick to point out that West Ham may not get this chance again for a long time.

Conversely Moyes’s recruitment has been second to none over the last two years and he has earned the right to be trusted in his methods.

With West Ham, though, it is the hope that gets you. While the window remains open there is always that glimmer of hope.

And a glimmer – or more precisely a five per cent chance – is exactly what West Ham have when it comes to landing a club record signing in a last gasp mega deal before the window closes.

That’s according to insiders Claret and Hugh.

“The reality is that we have just one “tiny” chance of buying a striker despite a bid of £50million having recently been knocked back by an unknown club,” Claret and Hugh claim.

“We have learned that despite several players having been put to the manager he considers none of them good enough other than the mysterious £50million striker.

“But we were told this afternoon that it’s now very unlikely to happen with chances being rated at less than five per cent.”

A chance is a chance. Even if it is just five per cent.

So we will keep our powder dry on being too critical of the window just yet.

But it does look increasingly likely that we can all go to bed nice and early on deadline day.
