West Ham going all out to sign £50m attacker in January but it could be a big mistake

West Ham United are said to be eyeing up a huge splash in the transfer market in January.

The upcoming January transfer window will be a vitally important one for West Ham, with numerous new signings required.

Sunday’s disastrous 5-0 defeat to Liverpool at the London Stadium highlighted the need for more bodies in January.

Julen Lopetegui is under real pressure now, and it’s actually up in the air right now as to whether he will still be in the West Ham dug-out come January.

It’s actually irrelevant who is in charge of the Hammers next month – the need for new arrivals remains the same.

The Hammers need a new centre-back, a powerful central midfield ball-carrier and a proven striker with blistering pace.

However, our latest alleged target doesn’t fit into any of those categories.

West Ham going all out to sign Brais Mendez in January

Real Sociedad attacking midfielder Brais Mendez is a firm transfer target for the Hammers this winter according to a report from Super Deporte.

West Ham are said to be pushing really hard now to bring him to the London Stadium, and are ready to ‘go all out’ to secure his signature.

The Hammers were actually linked with a move to sign Mendez, 27, just last week, and a £50 million fee is allegedly required to prise him away from Sociedad.

I have to say, I think we’d be making a big mistake by spending £50 million on Mendez.

Firstly, what we desperately need is a proven centre-forward with explosive pace – not another attacking midfielder.

Secondly, he will be 28 in January. West Ham need to change our approach to transfers whereby we sign young and hungry players going forward.

Brais Mendez is a decent player, but he’s just not what we need right now.

West Ham spending £50 million on the Spaniard in the January transfer window would be negligent in the extreme in my opinion.

We have far more pressing issues at the club right now than the needed for another attack-minded midfielder.
