Hammers boss David Moyes wants to bring the 24-year-old to the London Stadium in January, according to a report from the Sun.
The British tabloid suggest that Red Devils manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to bring the Lyon hitman to Old Trafford as well.
And if Manchester United really want Dembele, West Ham face a real problem.

The 20-time English league winners will be on the look-out for an established centre-forward either in January or next summer.
Edinson Cavani arrived at Old Trafford at the start of last month. The Uruguayan is not a long-term solution to United’s problems up front, however.
Dembele, meanwhile, seems to be tailor made for the Manchester United centre-forward role.
Impressive record
The striker has scored 44 goals in 102 appearances for Lyon. He racked up 51 goals in 94 games for Celtic before moving to France (Transfermarkt).

And according to Sky Sports, the 24-year-old dreams of joining Manchester United.
So it is clear and obvious to see that West Ham face a massive challenge if they are to sign Dembele.
Another problem is the Frenchman’s alleged price-tag. Lyon reportedly want around €40 million (£36 million) for the former Celtic striker (Sempre Inter).
So it is easy to see why the Hammers fans may be reluctant to get excited about the Moussa Dembele rumours just yet. A lot would need to happen in order for us to sign the Frenchman in January.
And the smart money would be on the 24-year-old joining Manchester United.
