West Ham United’s pursuit of a new goalkeeper has been further complicated following an injury to one of their targets.
Indeed, West Ham plan to sign a new goalkeeper during what remains of the January transfer window, as well as a central defender.
Nuno Espirito Santo is keen to bolster his backline as he attempts to pull his side clear of the relegation battle.
Which West Ham players do you think will LEAVE next?
An overhaul is occurring…
While defending is a team effort, the fact that West Ham have kept one clean sheet all season does not reflect well on current ‘keepers Alphonse Areola and Mads Hermansen.
Hermansen has been linked with a move away from West Ham as Nuno scours the market for a new custodian.
A certain Filip Jorgensen of Chelsea has been linked but a fresh complication has emerged.
West Ham United transfer target Filip Jorgensen suffers injury
Earlier this month, BBC Sport claimed that West Ham are hopeful that Chelsea will sell Jorgensen.
The former Villarreal stopper is reportedly keen to leave the Blues in a bid to become Denmark’s first-choice goalkeeper.
However, he did start for Chelsea during their win over Pafos in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
What would YOU do with Alphonse Areola? 🧤
Should West Ham stick with him? Or sign a replacement?
Still, Jorgensen only lasted for the first half and Blues boss Liam Rosenior confirmed he’d suffered an injury.
During his post-match press conference, Rosenior said: “Unfortunately he picked something up. Devastating for him because he’s really impressed me in his time. Not just the game at Charlton, but how he’s trained.”
That could be a blow for West Ham, with such little time left in the window for him to recover and then potentially work out a deal with their London rivals.

West Ham already have a leading Premier League goalkeeper
Frustrations over Areola are warranted. There have been a few mistakes and the fact he’s not kept a clean sheet all season is difficult to ignore.
Still, as per FBREF data, the Frenchman does boast the sixth-highest save percentage in the Premier League this season (72%).
That would perhaps suggest that signing a new goalkeeper isn’t quite as urgent as, say, landing a new central defender or two.
West Ham have been linked with several goalkeepers but there are surely more pressing issues to address during what remains of the window.
