The two signings that West Ham want next could flip the relegation battle on its head

West Ham United still have hope of securing Premier League safety.

After the defeat to one of the worst Wolves teams in recent history earlier this month, optimism in and around West Ham United was hard to come by.

While Nuno Espirito Santo’s side performed well against fellow relegation rivals Nottingham Forest after that dismal loss, they still ended up on the wrong side of the result.

What would YOU do with Alphonse Areola? 🧤

Should West Ham stick with him? Or sign a replacement?

West Ham United's Alphonse Areola acknowledges the fans at the end of the match during the Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on January 17, 2026 in London, England.

Still, a late win over Tottenham means safety is in sight. Though there’s still a lot to do for Nuno, Forest sit only five points ahead of the Hammers in the Premier League table.

In even better news, West Ham continue to push for new signings in their bid to beat the drop.

Now, more insight has emerged.

West Ham United want to sign a goalkeeper and a central defender

That’s because Nuno and majority shareholder David Sullivan are pushing to strengthen the club’s backline.

The biggest issue the Irons face right now is their leaky defence. They’ve actually scored more goals than Forest (24 to 21) but it’s their inability to keep them out that is currently on course to send them down.

No one has conceded more goals than West Ham this season (44). Unless they plug those gaps, the Championship surely awaits.

On a scale of 1-10, how confident are you of West Ham staying up after they beat Spurs?

It's not over just yet 👀

So, then, it’s promising to hear that the club do indeed have plans to make a signing in two key areas.

According to leading transfer reporter Alex Crook on talkSPORT, West Ham do have plans to sign both a new goalkeeper and a central defender.

“They’re trying to bring in a goalkeeper and a central defender as well,” he said.

“David Sullivan is doing his best to keep an unhappy Lucas Paqueta because he believes that will give them a chance of staying in the Premier League.”

Charlie Cresswell transfer update as West Ham push for defensive signing

In terms of the actual players of interest in those positions, Toulouse defender Charlie Cresswell has been a name who has dominated gossip columns and the like for a while now.

At one point, it appeared as if West Ham would lose out to Wolfsburg as they pushed to sign the England U21 international.

However, recent reports suggest that West Ham are trying to sign Cresswell again during what remains of the transfer window.

If West Ham do improve their defence, the relegation battle could be flipped on its head.
