West Ham and Edson Alvarez have made it perfectly clear they want to end their unhappy marriage as soon as possible.

There is no dressing it up, Edson Alvarez was one of many Tim Steidten flops for West Ham.

Signed for £35m from Ajax, the Mexican midfielder impressed in the first couple of months.

But he struggled to adapt to English football and lacked the pace, power and stamina to be a force in the Premier League.

Alvarez’s attitude was also called into question as he fell out with David Moyes, Julen Lopetegui and Graham Potter before being shipped out on loan to Fenerbahce.

Alvarez flopped so badly there he was jeered by Fener’s fans and even got into an angry back-and-forth with them which ultimately cost West Ham any hope of selling him to the Turkish outfit.

Ahead of being knocked out of the World Cup by England, Alvarez said he knows he “must report back with them” about his future with West Ham.

Some Hammers fans have suggested Alvarez might be worth keeping to help the club climb out of the Championship.

But it is clear neither he nor the club want that.

Now West Ham and Alvarez have made it clear they want to end their unhappy marriage.

Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg claims FC Koln want to sign Alvarez from the Hammers.

Plettenberg says West Ham have made it clear they are “100 per cent ready” to sell Alvarez.

So desperate in fact they are willing to accept another loan deal with an option to buy attached.

Alvarez has also made it clear he is desperate to leave West Ham and wants a new challenge, is open to joining Koln and is pushing his representatives to get a deal done.

What do the stats tell us about £17m Gustavo Sa? 🇵🇹

Is he a more complete player than Fernandes was when leaving Portugal?

Plettenberg claims West Ham and Koln are already in talks about a move.

A fee of around £8.5m has been suggested – which represents another huge loss for the Steidten era.

Other clubs are reportedly keen on Alvarez too but there is unlikely to be a bidding war given West Ham are open to a loan with an option to buy if it means getting him off their books.

The 28-year-old still has two years left on his Hammers contract.

His lack of durability and discipline was criticised by Moyes towards the end of his West Ham tenure.

Playing out in Turkey will not have improved that so it seems the best for all parties to bring the curtain down on the Mexican’s stay in east London.

Alvarez had all the ingredients to be something of a Hammers cult hero but it seems – like so many other Steidten signings – his heart was never really in it.

It was a mistake repeated by Steidten with the likes of Jean-Clair Todibo, who had to be persuaded to join, and even Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who admitted his main motivation in signing for West Ham was to move back to London.
