Hammers boss David Moyes is in the market for another attack minded midfielder – someone who can play on the flanks as well.
Villa boss Dean Smith is in the same boat.
West Ham are prioritising a move to sign Jesse Lingard on a permanent basis this summer.
The Sun claimed today that Moyes may have his work cut-out to do just that, however.
So it would be no surprise if the Hammers were exploring the idea of lining up alternative targets to Lingard.
West Ham and Aston Villa battling it out for Matheus Pereira
Foot Mercato claims that the Hammers and the Villans are both battling it out to sign the Baggies ace.
It is suggested that Pereira could be available for around €25 million (£22 million) this summer.
The 25-year-old play-maker was in sensational form for West Brom this season.
He racked up 11 goals and six assists in 33 Premier League games (Transfermarkt).
Pereira is a real game changer. The West Brom ace possesses a wicked delivery from set-pieces and has technical ability in abundance.
He really is an exceptional talent.
Pereira would be a wonderful signing for West Ham. Some would argue that he may actually be a better option than Lingard.
Whether the Brazilian ends up at the London Stadium or Villa Park, however, remains to be seen.
