As the one-year anniversary of his £40 million move to West Ham United approaches, how much is former Sporting Lisbon and Southampton starlet Mateus Fernandes worth these days?
Tony Gale, on co-commentary duty when Callum Wilson fired the Hammers to a stoppage-time victory over David Moyes’ Everton on Saturday, had his say.
Manchester United are reportedly keen on the Portugal international, potentially pairing Mateus Fernandes with compatriot and namesake Bruno at Old Trafford. According to reports in France, PSG have approached Fernandes’ representatives recently.
What does Matty need to IMPROVE to become the perfect midfielder?
Are there any weaknesses?
And a former centre-back who played over 300 games for West Ham United feels that, not only has the World Cup hopeful more than stepped into Lucas Paqueta’s shoes, he has seen his market value soar to around £80 million.
Tony Gale suggests West Ham United should demand £80m for Mateus Fernandes
“If you’re talking about Paqueta for Fernandes, it’s no contest,” Gale said. “He has probably doubled in value now, Fernandes.
“A very young man but there has been a lot of responsibility on his shoulders this season.”

Some reports have suggested that West Ham may consider offers in the region of £50 million. Should Nuno Espirito Santo secure another season of top-flight football, at Tottenham Hotspur’s expense, then the Hammers would be under no obligation to consider low-ball bids for a midfielder under contract until 2030, and one who joined for an already-sizeable fee in the first place.
The good news is that PSG coach Luis Enrique played down reports that the reigning European champions will pursue a big-money midfield signing this summer anyway.
TRUE or FALSE? Dinos Mavropanos has been West Ham’s BEST player in 2026 🔥
Ahead of what could be a Champions League semi-final for the ages against Bayern Munich – the first leg takes place on Tuesday night at the Parc des Princes – Enrique insists he is happy with his current options.
Options which include Vitinha and Joao Neves, two Portuguese princes who are already keeping Fernandes out of the Portuguese XI.
