A source close to the board says West Ham star Maxwel Cornet is proving Everton were wrong to pull out of deadline day deal over injury concerns.

Everton were heavily linked with a move for West Ham outcast Maxwel Cornet before the summer transfer window closed.

Everton were linked with several West Ham players during the course of the window including Michail Antonio and Ben Johnson too.

There was an obvious link given Sean Dyche brought Cornet to the Premier League when he signed him for Burnley.

West Ham purchased the Ivory Coast winger from the Clarets for £17.5m last summer. But he barely played either side of five months out with a rare calf injury.

Cornet has been frozen out by David Moyes at West Ham. With Said Benrahma and Pablo Fornals already ahead of him in the West Ham pecking order and Mohammed Kudus joining in a £38m deal from Ajax, Cornet it was a big surprise that he remained with the Hammers despite the interest from the likes of the Toffees.

The Telegraph claimed West Ham and Everton held talks in the run up to – and on – deadline day to do a deal for Cornet.

talkSPORT’s Alex Crook has since claimed that move would have gone through had West Ham signed Filip Kostic from Juventus.

But it is now being claimed Everton actually ditched the move at the 11th hour.

Sean Whetstone, whose sources include Karren Brady and David Sullivan, says Cornet being selected and playing nearly 70 minutes for Ivory Coast at the weekend shows Everton were wrong to doubt his fitness and worry about his injury history.

“Hammer Maxwel Cornet proving Everton wrong with 69 minutes on the pitch for Ivory Coast on Saturday,” Whetstone said.

“Everton pulled out a deal to sign the 25-year-old in the summer transfer window over medical concerns about his injury record and issues with his calf.

“Let’s hope he proves them all wrong!”

So it seems it was Everton who pulled the plug on the deal and not West Ham after their failure to sign Kostic from Juventus.

The main person Cornet must now prove himself to is Moyes himself.

Ivory Coast are in action again tonight with a friendly against Mali.
