Hammers boss David Moyes will be keen to bolster his ranks at the London Stadium this month.

Funds are tight at West Ham, however. So our best bet will probably be securing a couple of loan deals.

The Sun on Sunday (January 3rd, page 57) claims that the Hammers are eyeing a loan move for Crystal Palace centre-back Mamadou Sakho.

This is a really strange one, however.

The last place the Hammers need to strengthen this month is at centre-back.

We have Angelo Ogbonna, Fabian Balbuena and Craig Dawson all playing superbly well.

Aaron Cresswell has flourished as a left sided centre-back this season whilst Issa Diop is waiting in the wings. Meanwhile, West Ham have the likes of Aji Alese, Jamal Baptiste and Frederik Alves coming through the ranks.

West Ham move for Mamadou Sakho would be baffling

Signing the Eagles centre-half would make no sense whatsoever.

The 30-year-old has played a peripheral role for Palace this season. The 29-capped France international is not the player he once was. And signing him would go against David Moyes’s self confessed blueprint for success.

Let’s hope that it’s just paper talk. West Ham should be trying to sign a left wing-back, a striker and a central midfielder this month. We may not get them all. We certainly don’t need another centre-back though.

And signing Mamadou Sakho would be a big mistake from the Hammers.
