West Ham United have made contact with Barcelona regarding a potential January move to sign Junior Firpo, according to a report from Mundo Deportivo.

Hammers boss David Moyes will be desperate to sign a player who can play in both the left-back and left wing-back positions in January.

Since Arthur Masuaku was forced to undergo knee surgery, West Ham have had to revert to playing with a back four.

The Hammers had so much success previously when operating with a back five. Aaron Cresswell’s weaknesses were nullified when playing in central defence and the same could be said for Masuaku at left wing-back.

Our fine form has been disrupted since the change in formation. So bringing in an established left sided defender will be vital for West Ham in January.

Mundo Deportivo claims that Barcelona ace Junior Firpo is a target for the Hammers. In fact, the east London outfit have already contacted Barca regarding the possibility of bringing the 24-year-old to the London Stadium next month.

West Ham eyeing Junior Firpo transfer

The Spaniard joined Barcelona from Real Betis in the summer of 2019 for around €18 million (£16.2 million) according to Mundo Deportivo.

He has been described as an outstanding player who excels in 1v1’s, both from an attacking and a defensive perspective (Total Football Analysis).

Things haven’t gone to plan for Junior Firpo at the Camp Nou, however. He has made just 29 appearances for the Catalan giants (Transfermarkt).

The former Betis ace is a top class player, however. He can operate either at left-back or left-wing-back. And he is exactly the kind of player Moyes should be looking to sign.

Firpo is the right age. He is athletic, dynamic and has bundles of technical ability.

If Moyes can bring the 24-year-old to the London Stadium in January for a reasonable fee, he would be a truly great signing for West Ham.
